Old Perithia
The scenery is quite exhilarating; rolling hills and harsh, barren slopes.
Old Perithia was a very important centre, established about three hundred years ago. At one time it was the administrative capital of the north of the island.
There is much impressive architecture here in the stone buildings, the large schoolhouse and the many churches. Some lie in a semi-ruined state inviting us to imagine an ‘ancien regime’ and to experience a sense of nostalgia for what once was.
However, some of these are being renovated to their former glory. Set in the foothills of Mount Pandocrator, its distance from the hubbub of our normality, both in geographical terms and in terms of time, gives it the striking qualities of stillness and quiet, a kind of gentle soothing of the soul.
