Clean Monday - Salco Holidays - Low Cost Holidays to Corfu

Clean Monday

Kathari Deftera, “clean Monday” marks the beginning of the 40 days of lent before Easter. It is called clean Monday because it is the start of the cleansing and detoxing the body from meats and dairy foods.

It also marks the end of the 3 weeks of carnival.

It is one of the most eagerly anticipated public holidays of the year. The day is celebrated with big get togethers with family and friends and a feast of delicious seafood dishes.

A different kind of unleavened bread is baked especially for a Clean Monday; a delicious flat bread topped with sesame seeds perfect for spreading taramasalata on. It’s a shame it’s only eaten once a year!

I spent most of the day at Imerolia Fish Taverna in Kassiopi with friends and relatives. Lots of food, local wine, singing and dancing. Great day!
