From Ipsos holiday-makers can find reasonably easy access to some of Corfu’s most famous sites.
The Achilleion Palace is only 22 kilometres away; built in 1890 in the neo-classical style and dedicated to the hero of the Torjan War, Achilles. The Achilleion Palace is a beautiful mansion commissioned by the Austrian Empress, Elizabeth who used it as a summer house. The grounds are extensive and interestingly landscaped. There are a number of famous statues in the gardens, among them is the central feature of the Dying Achilles, a statue that conveys the vulnerability of the human condition and the anguish of imminent death; one of the court-yards is home to life-size statues of the Nine Muses.
Corfu Town itself is within easy reach by hire car with two main parking areas, the Liston and the Old Port.
Paleocastritsa is almost directly opposite Ipsos and the route from east to west across the island is only 18 kilometres long. Paleocastritsa is one of the most famous areas of Corfu; it is made up of several small bays and is the site of the Monastery of Our Lady (Theotokos Monastery) which was originally built around 1225. Paleocastritsa and the neighbouring seaward landscape offers some of the most spectacular views on the whole island.
